Women and personal property rights in 13th century England
So we hear often about how cultures ought to be treated as equivalent, none better than any other – a claimed attempt to reverse the trend of victors writing biased histories. But as this post points out, Brits were enjoying personal property rights and women in particular had the right to own property in thier own name long before any other culture in that era or since that I’m aware of. Too bad not every culture can make that claim.

Yeah, I deal with this sort of a thing in Linguistics all the time. But the question is, does the ‘right’ to own property really make one culture superior? After all, you might have the right, but be in such an oppressive society that you’re not able to achieve it! And… just out of curiosity… how did it come to pass that women LOST the right to own property?
